Tailored for you: The distinctive difference between custom-made and High Street Kitchens

The decision between a mass-produced kitchen and a custom-made kitchen is crucial, particularly when considering its impact on your home’s value and aesthetics. Opting for a bespoke kitchen means investing in a stunning space that is perfectly suited to your needs and built to last. It’s a choice that reflects a preference for quality, customisation, and sustainability. This blog explores the ordering process, material quality, and the overall experience of choosing between these options.

Ordering and Design Process: Simplicity vs. Personalisation

Mass Manufactured Cabinets: The process is straightforward – browse a catalogue or website, select from a limited range of options, and place your order. An “Off the Shelf” product is pre-produced and stored in a warehouse, ready to be picked for your order, meaning it cannot be customised. This might be suitable for those who are looking for function only, but when you invest in a bespoke kitchen, every project is unique. Each cabinet is made to order and is tailored to meet your needs, perfect for those who are seeking something luxurious, high quality and rich in character. Our design and production teams are intertwined and are experienced in both design and joinery, ensuring that your bespoke furniture is fully understood from every angle by everybody who has a hand in crafting it, ensuring a seamless integration into your home.

Kitchen Cabinet Construction Material and Quality

Bespoke cabinets are crafted from more refined, more durable materials than pre-fabricated cabinets. At Cornish Cabinet & Joinery Co, we use a wide range of block board timber, cabinet-grade plywood and timber veneer. In contrast, factory-produced cabinets are often 16-18mm chip board. While many mass producers use 4mm HDF for their backs or only a bracing bar, we prefer a solid full-height back. The same goes for the top of our cabinets, which are solid and complete from front to back, rather than a single bracing bar or metal strut as seen on entry-level products. Wherever is suitable, our cabinets are constructed with glue and dowel and set in a cabinet press rather than with a Kregg screw or a cam and dowel, thus ensuring our cabinets are square, solid and sturdy, giving your kitchen longevity that gives you peace of mind.

Solid Timber & Painted Doors vs. Foil Wrapped & Vinyl Wrapped: Aesthetic and Longevity

Imitation Vs the real thing: Why should you be concerned about the finish of your doors? Is it only choosing a colour, or is there something more to it? Are all doors made equal?

You should consider using your doors and their finish, as not all materials are suitable for all purposes. Many people buy a product without being sure what they are actually receiving for their money. One key term that is banded around is “Painted Finish”; this could be anything from hand-painted with a brush to painted foil wrap, and the differences are vast.

Foil wrapped: This is a painted foil which is then wrapped around a door; not very durable to damage; being very thin, it is also prone to de-lamination. Available in a set range of pre-manufactured colours.

Vinyl wrapped: Similar to the foil, vinyl is a solid colour oil-based wrap that is wrapped around one side of the door, the face, glued and vacuumed on with heat. A vinyl-wrapped door has a limited life span and will always, at some point in time, delaminate. Available in a set range of pre-manufactured colours.

Water-based paint: This is a step up from painted foil and is applied straight to the door on top of the primer. We will offer water-based paint, especially if you would like to see more of the wood grain through the paint. However, we tend to avoid it in most cases as it is less durable. Available from us in any colour, mixed to order.

AC Paint: This paint is toughened with a catalytic hardener, giving you a hard finish with a soft sheen appearance. A painted product can be touched up and repainted, giving it a much longer lifespan. Available from us in any colour, mixed to order.

Solid Timber: Unique in character, each piece of wood has unique grain patterns, giving your kitchen a one-of-a-kind look; solid wood represents the pinnacle of kitchen craftsmanship. It’s robust, durable, ages gracefully and is a real living product. We offer a range of responsibly sourced solid woods, kept healthy in appearance with a finish of oil and waxes or a lacquer if you wish. Available from us in a wide variety of timbers.

Quality of Finish: Hand-painted cabinets offer a unique quality of finish that factory-made options can’t match. The depth and texture achieved through hand painting add character and sophistication to your kitchen.

Bespoke Measurements for Your Unique Space

Bespoke kitchens genuinely shine in their ability to adapt to non-standard spaces. Unlike standard, off-the-shelf kitchen options, bespoke kitchens are designed with precision to accommodate every unique aspect of your home. This includes challenges like varying ceiling heights, unusual ceiling shapes, curved walls, or irregular room dimensions. With their limited size range, standard kitchens often need help to address these unique architectural features, leading to impractical layouts and wasted space.

Durability and Quality Craftsmanship

Beyond just fitting into unique spaces, bespoke kitchens promise durability and superior craftsmanship. Crafted with the finest materials, these kitchens are built to last, offering beautiful, sturdy, and timeless cabinetry that far outlasts standard, ready-made counterparts.

Seamless Integration: Tailoring Your Kitchen to Complement Adjoining Spaces

One of the standout advantages of a bespoke kitchen is the ability to create a harmonious design that extends beyond the kitchen itself, seamlessly integrating with adjoining rooms such as utility rooms, boot rooms, or dining areas. This holistic approach ensures that your home’s aesthetic and functional flow is uninterrupted, providing a sense of continuity and balance.

For instance, cabinetry in the kitchen can be designed to match storage solutions in the utility room, creating a cohesive look. Similarly, the flooring, colour schemes, and hardware can be harmonised across these spaces, making the transition from one room to another feel natural and thoughtfully planned.

Tailored Design for Functionality and Aesthetics

The design process considers both the aesthetic and functional needs of adjoining rooms. In a utility room, for instance, the focus might be on maximising storage space and incorporating practical features for laundry and cleaning tasks, while in a boot room, bespoke seating and storage for outdoor wear might be key. By considering these rooms as an extension of the kitchen, bespoke design ensures that every part of your home is not only beautiful but also perfectly suited to your lifestyle.

Creating a Cohesive Home Environment

This tailored approach to design helps in creating a cohesive environment throughout your home. It allows for a unified theme that reflects your personal style while ensuring that each room serves its purpose effectively and elegantly.

By choosing a bespoke kitchen, you’re not just investing in a standalone space; you’re enhancing the functionality and aesthetic of your entire home, ensuring that every room works in harmony both in design and purpose.
